Highway One Brewing Company, Pescadero
I finally made it up the coast to the Highway One Brewing Company for lunch. The place is next to a gas station right off the road and looks like it would offer the usual roadside diner fare. However, all of the food served in the restaurant is grown on the farms within the surrounding 15 miles of land. They raise their own chickens and pigs, who also recycle some of the restaurant waste. This farm-to-table mindset combined with a super casual and comfortable atmosphere makes this place is a special stop along the California Coast.
The menu offers many different options and unusual twists. It was really hard choosing between the Figgy Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Pot Roast Sliders, Thai wings, shredded kale salad, and Winter Squash Risotto Cakes. So many options! We somehow decided on the Portobello mushroom burger on lettuce bun, Beet It salad, and Chish & Fips - what they call fish and chips.
The garlic and herb house marinade made the portobello super flavorful and tasty. The fresh cut fries were delicious and seasoned with sea salt and herbs. The salad featured roasted beets tossed in a raspberry vinaigrette, greens, red onion, bleu cheese & candied pecans. The remoulade that came with the beer-battered rock fish was one of my favorite parts of the meal - spicy, creamy and totally different than the usual tarter sauce. The fish was delicious and the batter light and flavorful. The whole meal left an incredible impression.
